Johaniga viiendat korda ilvest otsimas / Tracking Lynx with Johan – His Fifth Time

 Sel sügisel käis Johan minuga juba viiendat korda ilveseretkel – seekord koos mõnusa ja ühtse seltskonnaga. Retk kestis viis päeva, mis möödusid  lennates: vaiksed õhtud ja öised metsad, mis pakkusid iga päev midagi uut.

Ilves – seekord 8/10 vaatlus

Ilvesed olid sel korral heas tujus.
Teisel ja neljandal õhtul õnnestus meil ilvest näha, kuid neljanda õhtu kohtumine oli tõeline pärl. Umbes 50 meetri kaugusel istus ilves kivi otsas, rahulik ja väärikas, ringi vaatamas.
See oli 8 punkti 10-st – väga hea vaatlus

Händkakk – seekord lihtsalt tavapärane saatja

Händkakk jäi retke jooksul silma umbes 15 korda. Seekord polnud ta eriline “staar”, vaid lihtsalt sageli kohatav metsakaaslane, kes lendas kord sihi kohal, kord istus kuuse oksalja vaatas meie tegemisi. Hilissügisene händkaku aktiivsus on üsna tavaline, kuid ühes retkes nii palju on väga tore

teised imetajad – elav ja mitmekesine mets

Viie päeva jooksul saime näha ka mitmeid teisi loomi:

  • Rebased – mitu korda

  • Hall ja valge jänes

  • Kährikud

  • Metsnugis


Linnud, kes rõõmustasid

Lisaks händkakule pakkusid rõõmu ka:

  • Värbkakk

  • Mänsak

  • Laanepüü

Öistel põldudel kohtasime  kõrvukrätsu ja soorätsu.



   This autumn, Johan joined me for a lynx-tracking adventure for the fifth time, this year together with a great and easy-going group. The trip lasted five days, and they passed incredibly fast. Forest nights  offered something different every day.

Lynx – a solid 8/10 sighting

We saw lynx on the second and the fourth evening, but the fourth evening gave us a truly exceptional moment.
A young lynx was sitting on a boulder about 50 metres away, calm and composed, observing the surroundings.
It was an 8 out of 10 sighting.

Ural Owl – a common companion this time

We encountered Ural Owls around 15 times, but this time they weren’t the “stars” of the trip — more like regular forest companions appearing here and there, flying across the track or sitting quietly in the treetops. Late autumn often brings active owls, and this week was exactly that.

Other mammals – a lively and varied forest

Throughout the five days, we also saw:

  • Red foxes – several times

  • Mountain hares and brown hares

  • Raccoon dogs

  • Pine marten


Bird highlights

Besides the owls, we enjoyed sightings of:

  • Pygmy Owl

  • Northern nutcracker

  • Hazel Grouse

During the nights, we also saw Long-eared Owl and Short-eared Owl.
